Why is it a problem that Adam Lambert did not win American Idol?

There are those telling me to let it go. There are those trying to suggest that it was some sort of conspiracy against Adam. There are those who want us to believe that Kris was a better talent than Adam. There are those who voted for Kris because they say he is cuter than Adam and think that is ok. There are those who voted for Adam just because he is gay, and they think that is ok. No, no, no no as Gruff would say. None of that is OK.

The voting method for American Idol makes it a popularity contest and not a talent contest, however Simon Cowell himself says it is a singing contest. He repeated it over 100 times during the course of AI Season 8 and probably many more times off camera. It that is the case the voting method and real purpose do not match, but we are stuck with what we have for now.

So if they have to do this by phone call and text message it could be done to take some of the popularity contest out of it. Don't allow multiple text votes from the same number and don't allow phone votes from the same number repeatedly would be a good start. Weight the vote of the judges and give it at least 55% precedence over the public vote.

Is this an important issue? To many no. To those who want equality in everything for Gays and Lesbians it must be a credible issue. We should not tolerate anything we can identify that can give anyone the ability to discriminate either willingly or unknowingly.
